Frequently asked questions

What image formats can I read EXIF from?

You can drop in any image your browser can open, including JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC. EXIF data is most common in JPEG and HEIC photos straight from a camera or phone; PNGs and WebP files often carry little or no metadata.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Parsing is 100% local in your browser using the exifr library — the image is read directly from your device and nothing, including any GPS location, is ever sent to a server.

Why does my image show no metadata?

Many screenshots, PNGs and images downloaded from social media or messaging apps have had their EXIF stripped, so there is simply nothing to display. The tool still shows the basic file facts like name, size, type and dimensions, and notes when no EXIF metadata was found.

Can EXIF reveal where a photo was taken?

Yes. Many phones embed GPS coordinates in EXIF, which can pinpoint exactly where a photo was taken. This viewer shows those coordinates and a map link so you can see what others could learn from your image.
